This Back-to-School initiative benefits underprivileged children in the Chicagoland area. The program partners with Communities That Care to collect backpacks filled with essential school supplies for low-income youth, ensuring they have the tools needed for academic success.

The process is simple: choose a Back-to-School tag with a supply list for a specific age group, purchase a new backpack, fill it with the listed items, and attach the tag to the front. It’s a meaningful way to make a child feel confident and prepared on that important first day of school.

Back 2 School Illinois (formerly The Illinois Currency Exchange Charitable Foundation) was established in 2010 by the Community Currency Exchange Association of Illinois (CCEA), representing more than 350 Currency Exchanges across the state. The organization’s roots go back even further, to the first free school supply distributions held years earlier.

While the Back 2 School program remains its primary focus, Back 2 School Illinois also runs other initiatives that align with its mission of supporting children’s education.

Back-to-School program benefiting underprivileged children in Chicagoland. This program partners with Communities That Care to collect backpacks filled with school supplies for low-income youth in our communities who are in need of the educational tools necessary for a proper education. 

The program works by choosing a Back-to-School tag with a list of the school supplies needed for each age group. Participants purchase a new backpack, fill it with the school supplies listed on the tag, and attach the tag to the front of the backpack. It’s a great way to make a child feel like a million dollars, equipped with a brand new backpack and school supplies on that first day of school!

Challenge Accepted

The food pantry hosted a “Food Fight Challenge” throughout the community from February 1 to March 1, 2022. D&A team members helped by donating items throughout the month until Anthony Crews, President, and Greg Neely, COO delivered the final drop-off. In November 2021, D&A donated over 1,600 pounds of food to the food pantry and is glad to continue their support this year.

Self-Help Closet & Pantry of Des Plaines

The Self Help Closet & Pantry of Des Plaines is an independent, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors. It runs with a staff of 70 volunteers and one part-time employee serving as the Executive Director. The Pantry serves more than 400 households – all in the city of Des Plaines or with children in Des Plaines public schools. Local schools, churches, businesses, fraternal organizations, individuals and the City of Des Plaines provide the majority of food and financial support to the Pantry.
